The political situation inside Kerala’s Left camp has become tense after a major election defeat, with fresh disagreements emerging over leadership in the Opposition. The Communist Party of India (CPI) has now openly opposed the idea of former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan becoming the Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly.
The issue was reportedly discussed in a recent CPI leadership meeting, where senior members raised objections to Vijayan continuing in a key leadership role. According to party insiders, some leaders argued that the Opposition post should be given to a new face. They also linked the Left’s electoral setback to Vijayan’s style of leadership during his tenure as Chief Minister.

The CPI, the second-largest partner in the LDF, has taken a firm stand on the matter. Its leaders feel that a change in leadership approach is necessary after the coalition’s defeat in the Assembly elections. The discussion has added pressure on the CPI(M)-led alliance, which is now trying to reorganise itself after losing power.
Election results deepen crisis for Left alliance
The recent Assembly elections brought a major setback for the LDF. The coalition managed to secure only 35 seats in total. Within this, Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) won 26 seats, CPI got eight, and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) secured one seat.
On the other side, Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) made strong comeback winning 102 seats and forming government. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also marked small but notable presence by winning three seats in the Assembly.
Silence from Pinarayi Vijayan
Amid the political debate, Pinarayi Vijayan has remained silent. The former Chief Minister has not spoken to the media or issued any statement on social media after the election results. His silence has led to speculation about whether he is willing to take up the role of Leader of the Opposition after serving two consecutive terms as Chief Minister.
Within the Left camp, this silence has added to uncertainty.
At the same time, if Vijayan chooses not to accept the post, senior CPI-M leader and former Finance Minister KN Balagopal is a possible contender for the position.
Debate over future leadership continues in Left
The leadership question is now a major topic within these parties. CPI leaders have reportedly said that unless Vijayan himself steps aside, there may be limited room for a different arrangement. However, opinions remain divided.
Former Left legislator Sebastian Paul has also added to the debate by publicly criticising Vijayan’s leadership style earlier in the day. He blamed it for the electoral defeat and called for a rethink within the party.
Meanwhile, another section within the LDF believes that despite the defeat, Vijayan’s long political experience could still be useful in the Opposition role, especially given the strong majority held by the ruling alliance. This view continues to keep his name in consideration.
The final decision is likely coming after the CPI-M state secretariat meeting. At the same time, CPI-M state secretary MV Govindan has said that the party will carry out a detailed review of its performance at all organisational levels following the election setback.
